Bavona Valley

Bavona Valley

Prepare to be amazed by the natural beauty of Bavona Valley! This trough valley is characterized by its impressive granite walls that stand tall on either side. However, it's not just the rocks that make Bavona Valley so unique. It's also known for its giant boulders that have fallen from the mountains over time. These rocks can be as large as houses, and the locals have even built new homes right next to them! Locals call this area "Splui," and as a result, most of the homes in this region are built from stone.

If you're looking for a place that has everything, then Bavona Valley is the perfect destination for you. Here, you'll find breathtaking waterfalls, stunning forests, and of course, plenty of rocks. The valley starts in Bignasco and continues northwest until it reaches San Carlo, which marks the end of the valley. The area is comprised of twelve small villages or hamlets, including Mondada, Fontana, Alnedo, Sabbione, Ritorto, Foroglio, Roseto, Fontanellata, Faedo, Bolla, Sonlerto, and San Carlo. Below is a picture of one of these villages, Ritorto:

If you happen to find yourself in San Carlo, you can take the cable car up to Robiei to enjoy a breathtaking panoramic view of the valley. Despite the natural beauty of Bavona Valley, it's surprisingly quiet compared to the rest of the canton, as most of the villages are not inhabited. The only exception is the main village of Cavergno, which has residents. The valley is not an easy place to live due to a lack of electricity, which is why most homes here are holiday homes or seasonal residences. While the valley does produce electricity from its three power plants and three reservoir lakes, it doesn't have an official power grid due to protective measures. Therefore, the only sources of energy for residents are solar cells, gasoline, small water turbines, candles, and petroleum. If you're looking for an adventure in a unique and stunning environment, Bavona Valley is the place for you!
